Take action - things you can do
- Shopping... Producing and transporting
food has a huge environmental impact. But buying sensibly can greatly
reduce this. Buy local - choose UK-produced fruit and
veg where you can, or visit a farmers' market. There is one in Stoke
Newington Church Street every Saturday from 10-2.30 and one less frequently
on Sundays at Alexandra Park. Buy organic food and
drink where possible and choose from a growing range of fair
trade food, drink, clothing and other products. Avoid excess
packaging and think about buying gifts for people that have low environmental
impact, eg book or cinema tokens.
- If you use a car..... Plan so that
you minimise its use. Try walking or cycling for short trips. Save up
trips that require a car, and combine them into one journey. Find out
about local trains and buses - list all the interesting places you could
go from your local station - and organise some leisure days when you
leave the car behind. Taking a bike on the train enables you to get
most places without a car. And of course, boycott
Esso.
- Recycle..... It's more important than
ever that we reduce the waste we create, and the pollution that it causes.
If you have a doorstep recycling scheme, use it, and get your neighbours
to as well. If not, take bottles and paper to on-street recycling bins,
and cans, books and clothing to the recycling depots in Park View Road
N17 or Western Road N22.
- Cut down on greenhouse gases.....
By reducing the energy we use, we can reduce the greenhouse gases we
are responsible for. Improve your home energy efficiency with draftproofing
and loft insulation. Install an energy efficient central heating boiler,
and make sure any fridges or washing machines are efficient models (they
now have to carry an energy label). Even better, buy renewable electricity
- see the main FoE website
for latest details.
